In a significant move to encourage public intervention during road accidents, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced a new initiative aimed at saving lives and ensuring swift medical help to victims. Speaking at an event, Gadkari emphasized that the government, in coordination with the Supreme Court, has introduced legal safeguards and incentives for individuals who assist accident victims.
Gadkari stated that people previously hesitated to help due to fear of police inquiries. “We’ve created a scheme to eliminate this fear. Now, even the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of protecting those who help. Police will not question you if you assist an accident victim,” he assured.

The minister announced that individuals who help transport accident victims to hospitals will be honored with the title of "Rakshak" (Protector) and will receive a financial reward of Rs 25,000. In addition, accident victims themselves will be eligible to receive up to Rs 1.5 lakh for medical treatment within seven days, covered through an insurance mechanism. A dedicated website has been developed where doctors can upload treatment details, facilitating immediate processing of claims.
Gadkari highlighted a crucial statistic: if accident victims are promptly taken to hospitals, nearly 50,000 lives can be saved annually. “I seek your cooperation in this mission,” he added.
The initiative marks a major step toward building a more responsive and humane road safety ecosystem in India.
