Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Tuesday addressed concerns in the Rajya Sabha over former U.S. President Donald Trump's recent announcement of a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, stating that the government is closely examining the implications of the development.
Responding during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Goyal said, “There have been many virtual meetings between the two sides (India-US). The implications of the recent developments are being examined by the government. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is engaged with all stakeholders, including exporters and industry, to gather their feedback and assess the situation.”
Goyal’s remarks come amid growing political scrutiny over India’s trade relations with the United States, especially following Trump’s public statements characterizing India’s economy in negative terms. While Trump is not currently in office, his statements are being watched closely due to his potential return to the White House and their impact on global trade sentiment.
