Ahmedabad, June 13 — In the aftermath of the Air India Flight AI-171 disaster, which claimed 241 lives, forensic teams have launched an intensive effort to identify the victims through DNA analysis. The crash site, located in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad, has posed significant challenges due to extreme heat and severe impact damage.
HP Sanghvi, Director of the Directorate of Forensic Sciences in Gandhinagar, confirmed that the process is underway, though intensely complicated by the high temperatures caused by the explosion and fire that followed the crash.
“The temperatures at the site were extremely high, which makes DNA recovery more complex,” Sanghvi stated. “However, we are using advanced methods to extract and match DNA from available tissue and bone samples to help bring closure to the grieving families.”
The remains are being matched with DNA samples collected from relatives of the victims, a process that requires both precision and time. Officials say priority is being given to identifying victims whose families have already arrived in Ahmedabad, while nationwide and international coordination is in progress for those from other states and countries.
In the absence of intact visual identification markers, DNA testing remains the most reliable method. Sanghvi emphasized the department's commitment to conducting the process with the utmost care and respect for the deceased and their families.
The Gujarat government has deployed additional forensic staff and logistical support to assist the process, and central agencies are also aiding with technical resources.
Meanwhile, grieving families continue to arrive at local hospitals and assistance centers set up by Air India, seeking answers and updates. Authorities have assured them that every possible step is being taken to ensure the swift and dignified identification of their loved ones.
