New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has dismissed allegations from the Congress Party regarding irregularities in the recent Haryana elections, calling them "baseless, misplaced, and devoid of facts." In a letter to the Congress, the ECI criticized the party for consistently casting doubt on electoral processes without evidence, especially during critical periods like polling and counting.
The ECI stated that these "generic" allegations could incite public unrest and even chaos, urging the Congress to adopt a more responsible approach and avoid making unsubstantiated claims election after election. The Commission cited five instances from the past year where Congress had questioned the legitimacy of electoral procedures without providing substantial proof.
The ECI’s letter emphasized that as a national party with extensive experience, Congress should practice due diligence before raising questions about the electoral process. The ECI encouraged the party to take “firm and concrete steps” to curb the tendency of issuing frequent allegations, especially those lacking factual support. The Commission highlighted the potential for turbulence when such accusations are made at sensitive junctures and expressed a firm stance on maintaining trust in the electoral system without interference or baseless claims.
