External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar addressed the Lok Sabha on recent developments in India’s relations with China, emphasizing the importance of peace and tranquility in border areas for fostering bilateral ties.
Dr. Jaishankar acknowledged that while the relationship between the two nations has seen progress in various domains, it has been significantly strained by recent border tensions. He highlighted the necessity of ensuring peace at the borders as a "pre-requisite" for the overall development of ties.
“We are clear that the maintenance of peace and tranquility in border areas is a pre-requisite for the development of our ties,” he said, underlining the importance of addressing these issues as a priority.
The External Affairs Minister informed the House that the two nations are set to engage in discussions regarding de-escalation efforts and effective management of activities in the border regions. This includes advancing efforts to avoid confrontations and ensuring stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Dr. Jaishankar expressed optimism about the recent disengagement process, which he described as an enabling step toward broader bilateral engagement. However, he underscored the need for a cautious and calibrated approach to re-engaging on other aspects of India-China relations, keeping national security interests as the foremost consideration.
The statement comes amid ongoing efforts to normalize ties following heightened tensions, including military stand-offs in border areas. Jaishankar’s remarks reflect India’s firm stance on resolving issues through dialogue while prioritizing the nation’s sovereignty and security.
The session saw members from various parties pressing for clarity on India’s strategic response and its long-term goals in managing its complex relationship with China.
