NEW DELHI — As Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) once again breached the 500 mark, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta – The Medicity, voiced deep concern over the city’s worsening pollution levels, describing the situation as a serious public health emergency.
“The recent spike in AQI beyond 500 is concerning, as it severely impacts people with asthma, heart disease, or hypertension,” Dr. Trehan said, highlighting the heightened vulnerability of those with pre-existing medical conditions.
He explained that high concentrations of particulate matter and toxic gases in the air can lead to life-threatening complications. “Such pollution can trigger heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory distress,” he noted.
Dr. Trehan also emphasized the broader social and developmental impacts of Delhi’s recurring pollution crisis, particularly during the year-end months. “This recurring crisis — worsened by stubble burning and Diwali fireworks — makes life difficult, especially for the elderly and children. The pollution affects children’s lungs and neurological development,” he said.
Calling for decisive and consistent action, Dr. Trehan urged authorities to “enforce stronger regulations and take urgent steps each year to reduce such inhuman levels of pollution and safeguard public health.”
