Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj addressed concerns about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) after two confirmed cases were detected in Karnataka. Speaking to the press, Bharadwaj underscored the state’s preparedness and the need for vigilance while urging the public not to panic.

"We have received information from the Central Government that two confirmed cases of HMPV have been detected in Karnataka," Bharadwaj stated. "Since the two individuals had no international travel history, it indicates local transmission, suggesting that such cases might exist in other states as well."

HMPV, a virus known to cause respiratory illnesses, has been reportedly spreading rapidly worldwide. Acknowledging Delhi’s status as the national capital and a major hub for international travel, Bharadwaj said, "I discussed this with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and he directed me on several precautionary steps."

The Minister revealed that he has written to the Chief Secretary to maintain constant communication with the Central Government, track developments, and ensure that protocols for acute respiratory illnesses are met. He further instructed the Health Secretary to personally visit three hospitals daily to monitor medicine availability, adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and the functionality of oxygen and PSA plants.

"I have asked for daily reports to be sent to me, even as I campaign for elections. We are committed to being alert and ensuring public safety. As of now, there is no need to panic," Bharadwaj assured.
