New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) and its affiliated hostels, blaming the previous government for years of neglect and administrative failure.

After meeting doctors and inspecting the college premises, CM Gupta said she was “shocked” at the state of the infrastructure. “I'm surprised by the work of the previous govt, on the hospital administration and the maintenance of the medical college. The college and the students are in very bad condition,” she said.

Highlighting the acute problem of overcrowding, Gupta noted that seven hostels built between 1966 and 1990 with a capacity for 1,200 students are currently housing over 3,200 students. “It is shameful that no renovation or repair work has been done in decades. It is very painful that our medical students are living there in such adverse circumstances, which is a threat to their security,” she added.

The Chief Minister also alluded to past incidents of violence and crime, including cases of sexual assault, underscoring the urgent need for a safe, secure, and functional campus environment. “If the previous government has failed to provide a compact and safe campus, then this in itself is very telling,” she said.
