New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday reaffirmed her government’s commitment to cleaning the Yamuna river, announcing that work is actively underway to desilt all 22 major drains that flow into it.

“Today, we are visiting almost every big drain in Delhi,” said Gupta while addressing reporters during a field inspection. “When questions are raised about what we are doing regarding cleaning river Yamuna — all 22 big drains that discharge into Yamuna — the work of desilting all of them is going on, and we are continuously monitoring the progress in this direction.”

Positioning herself as a hands-on leader, Gupta took a veiled swipe at her predecessors. “Unlike the previous government that used to be run from the AC rooms, we are on the ground, and our government is committed to working for the people,” she remarked.

The Yamuna, often described as Delhi’s lifeline, has long suffered from high levels of pollution, largely due to untreated sewage and industrial waste being dumped through stormwater drains. Gupta’s remarks come as her administration faces mounting pressure to show tangible progress on river clean-up efforts.
