New Delhi | In a significant move to bolster India's underwater warfare capabilities, the Ministry of Defence signed two major contracts worth approximately Rs 2,867 crore. These agreements aim to enhance the operational efficiency of Indian submarines with cutting-edge technology.
The contracts, signed on December 30, 2024, in New Delhi, involve the construction of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug for the DRDO-AIP system and its integration into Indian submarines. Additionally, they include the integration of the Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) onboard Kalvari-Class submarines.
The agreements were finalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, reflecting the government's commitment to strengthening indigenous defense production and advancing India’s self-reliance in strategic technologies.
The DRDO-AIP system, designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is expected to significantly enhance the endurance and stealth capabilities of Indian submarines by enabling them to remain submerged for longer durations without surfacing for oxygen.
Meanwhile, the integration of the EHWT with Kalvari-Class submarines marks another leap forward in underwater combat capabilities. These torpedoes are known for their advanced guidance systems and devastating impact, making them a potent addition to the Indian Navy's arsenal.
This development aligns with the Ministry's ongoing efforts to modernize the naval fleet and ensure robust maritime defense. The contracts represent a milestone in India’s journey towards achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat in defense manufacturing, ensuring that Indian submarines are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to safeguard national security.
