Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh – In a landmark statement that carries deep spiritual and cultural significance, Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama has confirmed that he will have a reincarnated successor after his death, ensuring the continuation of the 600-year-old institution of the Dalai Lama.
The much-anticipated declaration came on July 2, when the Dalai Lama issued a formal statement from his residence in Dharamshala. This announcement has drawn widespread attention from the global Buddhist community, which had been awaiting clarity on the future of the institution, particularly after the Dalai Lama had previously indicated he would speak on the matter upon turning 90.
“This is going to be important for all Buddhists, not just in India but across the world,” said Maling Gombu, General Secretary of the Indian Himalayan Council of Nalanda Buddhist Tradition. “Yesterday, he issued his much-awaited statement and confirmed that he will be reincarnated, which means the 600-year-old institution of the Dalai Lama will continue.”
In his statement, the Dalai Lama emphasized the spiritual and symbolic importance of the role, underscoring its relevance in the preservation of Tibetan identity, Buddhist philosophy, and global compassion.
