New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Sunday strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its decision to send a four-member fact-finding committee to West Bengal to investigate the recent alleged gangrape case in Kolkata. She accused the BJP of selectively politicizing crimes against women, while ignoring similar or worse incidents in states governed by the party.
“BJP has no right to send a fact-finding team,” Mohamed stated. “There were reports of rapes in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, and even an incident inside a school in Badlapur, Maharashtra. Where were the BJP’s fact-finding teams in those cases?” she asked, calling out what she described as the party’s double standards.
Mohamed also referred to several other controversial episodes involving BJP-backed individuals or in BJP-ruled states. “Let’s not forget Ram Rahim being granted furlough in Haryana despite being a rape convict. Let’s not forget Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of molesting women wrestlers, yet remained an MP and even led the wrestlers’ federation,” she said.
She further reminded the public of the Bilkis Banu case, where convicts were released and later celebrated, allegedly with political backing. “These examples expose the BJP’s hypocrisy. They use crimes against women as political tools when it suits them, but ignore justice when the perpetrators are linked to their party,” she asserted.
