New Delhi | Congress MP Pramod Tiwari has strongly opposed the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur, claiming it was a political maneuver to prevent the opposition from forming the government.

“Why was President’s rule imposed when preparations were being made to bring a no-confidence motion?” Tiwari questioned, pointing out that Chief Minister Biren Singh had already lost his majority and resigned.

According to Tiwari, the opposition should have been given the opportunity to form the government once the ruling party lost its numbers. “Since the no-confidence motion is coming, as an option, the opposition should be called to form the government. They could not form the government directly and hence indirectly imposed President's rule,” he alleged.

The imposition of President’s rule in Manipur has sparked a fresh political controversy, with the opposition accusing the BJP-led central government of bypassing democratic procedures. The ruling party, however, has justified the decision, citing political instability and the need for governance continuity.
