New Delhi: Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on Saturday reacted to US President Donald Trump’s statement on trade, asserting that India’s national interest must remain above personal relations between leaders.

Tiwari said the imposition of a 50 per cent tariff by the United States is not just a policy matter but one that directly affects India’s 140 crore citizens. He emphasised that while the nature of personal ties between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump is a bilateral matter, it should not overshadow the broader concerns of India’s economic interests.

“The question is not about Trump-Modi relations, it is about India-US ties and India’s interests. The 50 per cent tariff that has been imposed is against the 140 crore people of India. The nature of personal ties between the two leaders is their matter, but India’s national interest is paramount and this tariff should be removed,” Tiwari said.

The Congress leader argued that such trade measures could hinder India’s exports and harm domestic industries, calling on the government to take a firm stance in negotiations with Washington.
