New Delhi: Congress MP Tanuj Punia has called for a significant institution to be named after former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, emphasizing his contributions to the nation, particularly during times of economic crisis. Punia’s remarks come amid growing demands from the Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) to rename Delhi University’s upcoming college in Singh’s honor.
Speaking at an event, Punia said, “It is very important to remember the great personalities of our country. Today, Manmohan Singh is not with us, but the strength he provided to the nation and the guidance he gave to the world during the economic crisis is a significant achievement. A major institution should be named after such a great personality.”
The NSUI has echoed this sentiment, writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to propose naming the college after Singh instead of Veer Savarkar, as previously announced. The student body argues that Singh’s legacy as an economist and statesman deserves recognition through an educational institution under the University of Delhi.
