Kulgam, J&K: Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Thursday reacted to reports of activist Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest, describing it as an “unwanted step” and highlighting Wangchuk’s dedication to the cause of Ladakh.

Speaking about recent unrest in the region, Mir said, “The people of Ladakh have always been known for their peace-loving nature. A group of activists has been protesting for the last six years. Among these activists, two fell severely ill. Looking at this, the youth got agitated.”

The leader addressed allegations linking Congress members to the unrest, noting that a government-shared photograph allegedly showed a Congress councillor instigating the crowd. “The Congress councillor has challenged it, saying that it was not him. No Congress worker had any involvement in this violence,” he said.

Mir added that the local Congress unit has formally demanded a judicial inquiry to examine the incident in detail. “It is wrong to blame Congress. The government there mishandled the whole incident,” he asserted, emphasising the need for a transparent investigation.
