New Delhi | The issue of allocating space for a memorial for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has sparked a political clash, with Congress leader Pawan Khera accusing the BJP of insensitivity and politicization. Speaking to the media, Khera expressed outrage over the handling of Singh’s funeral arrangements and the subsequent delay in memorial plans.
“Have you ever heard of another former PM whose funeral happened at the Nigambodh Ghat?” Khera questioned, highlighting what he perceived as a lack of dignity afforded to the late leader. He pointed out that Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had even offered land from the Shakti Sthal for the funeral, with the hope that a memorial could later be constructed at the site.
“There was no focus on the person’s family whose funeral was being performed. Is it necessary to focus on the PM always?” Khera said, criticizing the BJP for prioritizing political motives over respect for the deceased.
Khera accused BJP leaders JP Nadda and Hardeep Singh Puri of engaging in “cheap politics,” claiming that a notification to build a memorial was only issued after significant pressure from the Congress.
The BJP has yet to respond to Khera’s allegations. However, the controversy highlights the increasing politicization of memorial spaces for national leaders. While Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy remains widely revered, the debate over his memorial underscores the challenges of ensuring that tributes to leaders remain above political contention.
