New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved significant infrastructure and development measures, including special packages for Assam and Tripura as well as a major highway project in Tamil Nadu. The decisions were announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw following a Cabinet meeting in the capital.
Under the existing Central Sector Scheme of Special Development Packages, four new components have been sanctioned for Assam and Tripura with a total outlay of ₹7,250 crore. Of this, ₹4,250 crore will be provided by the Centre and ₹3,000 crore by the respective state governments. According to the minister, these measures are aimed at furthering socio-economic growth in the North-East, an area that has seen a marked reduction in insurgency-related activities in recent years.
Vaishnaw highlighted that since 2014, over 10,000 armed cadres in the North-East have surrendered and joined the mainstream, attributing the shift to solutions developed through sustained dialogues over the past 11 years.
