Delhi: Responding to allegations of partiality in the preparation of Bihar’s electoral rolls, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Monday said the Election Commission operates strictly under constitutional provisions and follows transparent procedures in conducting national and state assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters, Kumar explained that due to decentralisation, local authorities are responsible for preparing electoral rolls, with the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) taking the final decision. “If anyone has objections, they can file them with the District Magistrate and then the Chief Electoral Officer. Political parties should be active in this regard. There is no case of partiality as everything is transparent,” he stated.
Kumar added that people in Bihar had contributed to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, and any voter complaints received during the exercise were resolved by the EROs. He said the main reasons for deletion of names from voter lists included deaths, unproven citizenship, or permanent migration to other states.
