The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR. A case has been registered under various sections. A case has been registered against unidentified persons under sections 337, 338, 304A and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The petitioner named Papu Kumar Naik. He is a sub-inspector of I/C Balasore, GRPS by profession. The cause of the Coromandel rail accident in Balasore is still shrouded in mystery. Apparently, it was believed that signalling problems caused one of the worst rail accidents in the country. However, allegations of conflict cannot be ruled out right now. The Railways has handed over the probe to the CBI.
