Kolkata witnessed an emotional homecoming today as BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw arrived in the city after being released from the custody of Pakistan Rangers. Shaw had been detained since April 23, 2025, after he inadvertently crossed the international border while on duty in Punjab’s Firozpur district.

Shaw, a member of the Border Security Force’s 'Kisan Guard' unit, was deployed to ensure the safety of Indian farmers operating close to the Indo-Pak border. While on patrol near the border fence, Shaw is reported to have crossed over unintentionally, leading to his detention by Pakistani authorities.

After nearly three weeks in custody, diplomatic efforts led to his release on May 14, following coordinated discussions between Indian and Pakistani border forces. His return to Indian soil was met with relief and quiet celebration, especially among his family and fellow jawans.
