Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jagdambika Pal strongly criticised the signing of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a historical error that undermined India’s farmers and parliamentary processes. He argued that the treaty, signed in 1960 during the tenure of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was concluded without consultation with the Union Cabinet or approval from Parliament.
Pal described the move as a setback for Indian agriculture, contending that the treaty granted Pakistan significant control over river waters that were crucial for India’s farmers. He characterised the decision as a betrayal, alleging that it was made unilaterally and without the backing of democratic institutions.
The MP also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent remarks and decisions concerning the treaty, stating that the government’s current stance reflected a commitment to safeguarding India’s water rights. According to Pal, ending or re-evaluating the treaty was an important step in correcting what he termed a long-standing injustice.
