New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a fierce attack on the Congress on Monday, accusing its top leaders of making repeated, derogatory remarks against President Droupadi Murmu, India’s first tribal woman President. BJP National Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia cited a string of past statements by Congress leaders, calling them “intentional and disgraceful.”
“Udit Raj said that no country should get a President like Droupadi Murmu... Adhir Chowdhury addressed the President as 'Rashtrapatni'. It was such a derogatory remark toward a tribal woman,” Bhatia said, referencing previous incidents that had sparked outrage.
He further alleged that Congress leaders are unwilling to accept a tribal leader in a high constitutional post, stating, “The Congress leaders believe that only the fake Gandhi family members can hold the position of constitutional posts.”
Bhatia also cited Congress leader Ajoy Kumar’s past remark claiming President Murmu reflects an “evil mindset,” and condemned Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s latest comment, calling it “neither accidental nor a slip of the tongue.”
“Today’s objectionable comment by Mallikarjun Kharge proves that this is not a slip of the tongue; it is very much intentional. We ask, would Mallikarjun Kharge also render a written apology for his disgraceful and derogatory remarks?” Bhatia demanded.
The BJP has framed the issue as an attack on the dignity of a tribal woman and has accused the Congress of harboring elitist and casteist prejudices.
