Delhi: BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday raised serious concerns over the recent attack on Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh, claiming it was a pre-planned act of cultural aggression. Addressing a press briefing in the national capital, Patra said the BJP views the incident with utmost seriousness and sensitivity, given Tagore’s stature as a symbol of India’s and Bengal’s civilisational legacy.
“Today’s topic is about Bangladesh. We are not intruding on any international domain. But this is the topic of Rabindranath Tagore, so the BJP takes it very seriously and sensitively,” Patra said. “On Tuesday, Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral house, located in Bangladesh, was attacked and damaged... His Kacharibari, built by his grandfather, has been attacked.”
Citing preliminary reports, Patra alleged that the attack was carried out by members of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam, two radical Islamist groups known for their extremist rhetoric. “We are getting to know that the people of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam carried out this attack. It is also coming to light that this was a pre-planned attack,” he stated.
He added that for five days, plans were made to target the cultural landmark. “The house of Rabindranath Tagore—the foundation and pillar of our civilisation and culture of Bengal—was attacked so that they could send a big message to the world,” Patra said, underscoring the symbolic intent behind the vandalism.
The BJP has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, with Patra urging the Bangladesh government to act swiftly and decisively. The incident has sparked outrage among cultural and political circles in India, as calls grow for diplomatic engagement and international attention to safeguard shared heritage and minority rights in Bangladesh.
