New Delhi – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday attributed the continued existence of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to what he described as historical missteps by Congress governments, particularly decisions made by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. His remarks were made during a heated parliamentary session, where national security and India-Pakistan relations were under discussion.
“Yesterday, they (Congress) were raising questions about why there was no war. Today, PoK exists only because of Jawaharlal Nehru,” Shah said, referring to the events surrounding the early years of India’s independence and the Kashmir conflict.
He further criticized the Congress party’s approach in the years that followed. “In 1960, they gave 80% of the Indus waters to Pakistan,” he said, referring to the Indus Waters Treaty brokered with World Bank assistance.
“Then in 1971, during the Simla Agreement, they forgot to ask about PoK. If they had taken PoK then, we would not have to carry out attacks on camps there now,” he added, suggesting that India missed a strategic opportunity after the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
