New Delhi | Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking on Tuesday, launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of disrespecting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Shah alleged that Congress actively opposed Ambedkar during his lifetime and neglected to honor him appropriately after his death.

“During the parliamentary discussion, it was evident how Congress opposed Baba Saheb Ambedkar. They even mocked him after his passing,” Shah said.

Highlighting the timeline of Bharat Ratna awards, Shah alleged Congress delayed honoring Ambedkar with the prestigious award. “Nehru gave the Bharat Ratna to himself in 1955, and Indira Gandhi did the same in 1971. Baba Saheb Ambedkar received the Bharat Ratna in 1990 when Congress was not in power, and the government was supported by the BJP,” he claimed.

Shah further criticized Jawaharlal Nehru, accusing him of harboring animosity toward Ambedkar. “Nehru's hatred for Ambedkar is well known,” he stated, adding that Congress’s approach toward Ambedkar’s contributions reflected a lack of respect for his legacy.

The remarks have sparked political reactions, with BJP leaders amplifying Shah’s assertions and Congress leaders expected to counter the claims. The contentious narrative is likely to fuel further debate as the nation reflects on Ambedkar's enduring influence on India’s democracy.
