Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has responded to allegations made by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regarding the conduct of state elections. Addressing the matter, Pawar referred to his constituency of Baramati, noting that in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the candidate from his party secured 48,000 fewer votes. However, just five months later, in the Assembly elections, he won from the same area by over one lakh votes.
Pawar said the change in results did not imply wrongdoing, adding that electoral outcomes can vary based on voter preferences at different times. He emphasised that a lack of success for some political figures should not automatically lead to allegations of irregularities.
Highlighting constitutional provisions, Pawar stated that every individual has the right to raise questions about elections. However, he underscored that it is the Election Commission’s role to examine such concerns, determine their validity, and take necessary action if discrepancies are found.
