Air pollution will feature prominently in the discussions at the upcoming COP30 climate summit, with organisers highlighting its dual impact on public health and climate change. COP30 CEO Ana Toni said the issue would be a central part of the agenda, particularly for developing countries.

Speaking in New Delhi on Monday, Toni outlined the summit’s priorities. “At COP30, what we’re trying to achieve is really accelerating actions that help development, well-being of people, and prosperity. Tackling air pollution helps health, especially that of children, while also fighting climate change,” she said.

She added that the focus would extend beyond carbon emissions to cover a broader spectrum of pollutants, including methane and particulate matter, which significantly affect air quality and human health.

The inclusion of air pollution as a key theme reflects growing recognition of its widespread impact in regions such as South Asia, where cities frequently rank among the most polluted in the world. Experts have long argued that reducing pollution brings immediate health benefits while complementing long-term climate goals.

COP30, scheduled later this year, will bring together world leaders, scientists, and activists to push for stronger climate action. The emphasis on air quality is expected to create space for initiatives that link environmental sustainability with human development, giving countries a chance to align health and climate agendas.
