New Delhi: At the launch of the Roadmap for AI for Viksit Bharat and the NITI Frontier Tech Repository, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam on Monday said artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly accelerate India’s growth trajectory and transform its economy.

“We will continue to be a fast-growing economy. With AI, we will not only be the fastest-growing economy but the fastest by a mile,” Subrahmanyam said. He added that if deployed effectively, AI could push India’s annual growth rate beyond 8% and help achieve developed economy status much earlier than expected.

Citing projections, the NITI Aayog chief said AI could contribute an additional $2 trillion to India’s GDP by 2035 — nearly two-thirds of the country’s current economic size. “AI, if used correctly for productivity gains and increasing our innovation rate, will certainly take India into the 8-plus rate of growth per annum. It is going to add at least $2 trillion extra by 2035, just from the use of AI,” he noted.

Subrahmanyam also stressed the importance of preparing the workforce for emerging opportunities. “The use of AI will create more jobs, new types of jobs. For this we need appropriate skilling,” he said, adding that NITI Aayog would soon release additional roadmaps covering AI adoption in government, industry, and employment generation.

The roadmap unveiled on Monday outlines strategies to integrate AI into various sectors, enhance innovation, and build capacity for a technology-driven economy, in line with the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
