A tragic stampede during the Mauni Amavasya Snan at the Maha Kumbh 2025 has resulted in at least 30 fatalities, confirmed DIG Kumbh Mela Vaibhav Krishna at a press conference on Tuesday. The incident occurred early in the morning between 1 and 2 am, just ahead of the Brahm Muhurta, as thousands of devotees gathered for the holy dip.

Krishna explained that the large crowd, moving along the Akhara route, caused the barricades to collapse, triggering panic and chaos. “The crowd on this side crossed to the other side and started running over devotees waiting for Brahm Muhurta,” he said, describing the horrifying scene.

The administration responded swiftly to the crisis, enforcing a rescue operation and creating a green corridor to ensure the safe passage of ambulances. “We took 90 injured devotees to hospitals. Unfortunately, 30 of them have died,” Krishna stated.

The stampede, which occurred during one of the most auspicious days of the Kumbh Mela, has raised concerns over crowd management and safety protocols at the massive religious gathering, which attracts millions of devotees every year. Authorities have pledged to improve security measures as the event continues.
