21 Retired Judges Write To CJI Regarding Pressure On Judiciary System

BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a significant move, 21 retired judges of the Supreme Court and various high courts on Monday addressed a letter to the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressing concern over unwarranted pressures on the judiciary.

Through the letter, the 21 judges expressed their shared concern regarding alleged escalating attempts by certain factions to undermine the judiciary through calculated pressure, misinformation, and public disparagement. It further claimed that such attempts are made for narrow political and personal gains, trying to erode the public's confidence in the judiciary system.

The letter also wrote "We are particularly concerned about the tactics of misinformation and the orchestration of public sentiment against the judiciary, which are not only unethical but also detrimental to the foundational principles of our democracy. The practice of selectively praising judicial decisions that align with one’s views while vehemently criticizing those that do not undermine the very essence of judicial review and the rule of law."

A group of prominent lawyers namely Harish Salve, Manan Kumar Mishra, Adish Aggarwala, Chetan Mittal, Pinky Anand, Hitesh Jain, Ujjwala Pawar, Uday Holla, Swaroopama Chaturvedi and 500 others wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud expressing deep concerns over alleged political and professional pressure on Judiciary on March 28, Thursday.
