The year 2024 proved pivotal in reshaping Indian politics, with major surprises in the Lok Sabha elections. Despite the BJP-led NDA's pre-election claims of securing over 400 seats, the alliance had to settle for 293, falling short of expectations.
The BJP, which had dominated previous elections, managed 240 seats, losing its majority in the Lok Sabha. Nevertheless, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured enough seats to form the government, ensuring that Prime Minister Narendra Modi retained his position.
The opposition INDIA Alliance made a significant impact, collectively winning 234 seats. The Congress, a major player in the alliance, secured 99 seats, its best performance in recent years. The Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress followed with 37 and 29 seats respectively, contributing to the coalition's success in breaking BJP's dominance.
These election results highlighted a shift in voter sentiment and the growing strength of regional parties and opposition alliances. While the BJP continues to lead the government, the reduced majority and the rise of the INDIA Alliance signal a more competitive political landscape in the coming years.
