Kyiv, 16 August — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that he held an extended conversation with US President Donald Trump, focusing on efforts to end the war with Russia. He welcomed Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia, calling it a “suitable format” for resolving key issues.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy wrote, “We had a long and substantive conversation with @POTUS. We started with one-on-one talks before inviting European leaders to join us. This call lasted for more than an hour and a half, including about an hour of our bilateral conversation with President Trump.”

According to Zelenskyy, Trump briefed him on his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and outlined the main points of their discussion. He stressed that US influence would play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of peace efforts. “It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation,” he said.
Zelenskyy confirmed he will meet Trump in Washington on Monday to discuss details aimed at ending the war. He also underlined the importance of European involvement to secure “reliable security guarantees together with America” and welcomed “positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.”
The Ukrainian president reiterated that Kyiv remains committed to working with “maximum effort to achieve peace” while continuing close coordination with international partners.
