BY A STAFF REPORTER: The United States believes at least seven people have been killed in the latest air strikes against Iran-linked militias in Syria, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

It would be the first casualty since the U.S. launched retaliatory strikes last month against militias blamed by Washington for attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria. Other attacks targeted unused facilities, including weapons stockpiles.

U.S. and coalition forces have attacked Iraq and Syria at least 55 times since Oct. 17, injuring 59 people.

Statements from the militant groups responsible said the attack was in response to US support for Israel in the Gaza war.

The U.S. official said the men were killed in an attack on a training center near the town of al-Bukamal. '
