'Unforgivable Crime Against Humanity': Momen on Benapole Arson Act

The Foreign Minister categorically stated that the authorities would rigorously search for the conspirators and penalize them according to the country's law.

BY A STAFF REPORTER: Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, Abul Kalam Abdul Momen condemned the Benapole Express Arson act ahead of general elections in a press release on 6th January, Saturday.

While detailing the whole incident that occurred on Friday night, Momen asserted that this was a deliberate attempt to hamper the election scheduled on 7th January and evoke fear, terror, and panic amongst the residents. He also asserted that the act aimed to undermine democracy, assault the democratic process, and violate the rights of citizens. Moreover, Momen also mentioned that 'this act of setting train of fire' has occurred before as well.

In a tragic incident, Benapole Express carrying about 292 passengers was set on fire by unknown arsonists which resulted in the death of four passengers out of which two were minors. Four coaches of the Benapole Express, which runs from Benapole town bordering India to Kamalapur Station, Dhaka, were set ablaze around 9 PM near the Gopibag Kachabazar Area.
