London: British-Indian peer and House of Lords member Lord Rami Ranger has described the proposed UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as the “mother of all trade deals,” calling it a monumental opportunity to elevate bilateral ties and global positioning. He emphasised that the agreement is not merely transactional, but a long-term strategic alliance spanning economics, defence, education, and security.

Speaking exclusively to ANM News, Lord Ranger said, “This is not a small trade deal — it’s between the world’s fourth and sixth largest economies. Britain will gain access to a market of 1.4 billion consumers, and India will benefit from the UK’s leadership in science, medicine, and technology.”

He pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as a powerful example of successful UK-India collaboration, where British innovation and Indian manufacturing scale helped save millions of lives. “That synergy is real — India can produce at scale, and the UK brings innovation. It’s a win-win.”

On defence cooperation, he underlined India’s growing need for arms amid regional tensions. “The UK can manufacture aircraft carriers, ships, planes, and hydroplanes in India at reduced cost. These can then be exported globally, much like JCB, which now exports Indian-made equipment to 90 countries,” Ranger said, calling it a model of success.

He further urged both Indian and British companies to open offices in each other’s countries, advocating for joint ventures in labour-intensive industries like shipbuilding and aerospace. “Post-Brexit, the UK needs trusted partners — and India is a natural fit,” he said.

Highlighting the strength of India’s workforce, he said, “Indian professionals are highly skilled, loyal, and driven. From Microsoft to NASA, they’re leading globally. This is a ready-made workforce.”

Lord Ranger also praised Tata Group for its ethical business model and deep-rooted investment in the UK, noting that India is the second-largest investor in Britain. “Tata is respected across the board. With Indian companies expanding and students arriving under a merit-based system, our ties are only getting stronger.”

He pointed out that beyond trade, the deal symbolises a new phase in UK-India relations. “We understand each other. We speak the same business language. After 200 years of colonial history, we now stand as equals. That’s transformative.”

Ranger credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India’s global ascent over the past decade. “PM Modi has brought a new sense of optimism and pride to the Indian diaspora. His ‘Make in India’ vision, combined with this FTA, will not just benefit India and the UK — it will have a global ripple effect.”

Calling the deal “made in heaven,” Lord Ranger concluded, “This agreement will not only boost trade and investment but also strengthen global security. And once other nations — the US, Canada, the EU — see the success of this partnership, they’ll follow. The future between our two great nations is brighter than ever.”
