During a speech to U.S. military personnel in Qatar, President Donald Trump claimed a significant role in mediating the recent escalation between India and Pakistan. He described how tensions, which had been rapidly intensifying, were defused through his intervention.

“I don’t wanna say I did but I sure as hell helped settle the problem between Pakistan and India last week, which was getting more and more hostile and all of a sudden you’ll start seeing missiles of a different type and we got it settled,” Trump said. He added that both Pakistan and India were pleased with the outcome and that discussions also included trade as a preferable alternative to conflict.

The President expressed cautious optimism about the lasting nature of the peace, saying, “I hope I don’t walk out of here and two days later find out that it is not settled, but I think it is settled.” He humorously reflected on the long history of animosity between the two countries, noting, “They have been fighting for about a thousand years in all fairness,” and suggesting he could help bring a lasting resolution.
