BY A STAFF REPORTER: Sudan's warring sides clashed overnight and in the capital on Friday morning after talks aimed at maintaining a ceasefire and resolving the humanitarian crisis collapsed. Residents of Khartoum and nearby Omdurman said the army had resumed air strikes and used more artillery as fighting continued, but there was no sign that its paramilitary enemies were retreating from the city's streets and homes.

Seven weeks of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces has destroyed parts of central Khartoum, threatening to destabilize vast areas. Inside Sudan, 1.2 million people have been displaced and another 400,000 have been sent to neighboring countries.

The cease-fire talks were suspended on Thursday after a U.S.-Saudi-brokered cease-fire agreement collapsed, accusing both sides of occupying homes, businesses and hospitals, air strikes and enforcing prohibited military operations.
