Geneva, Switzerland: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on September 30 addressed members of the Awami League via phone as they staged a protest in front of the Broken Chair monument in Geneva. The demonstration coincided with the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, where delegates from across the world are gathered.
The protesters accused the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus of committing human rights violations in Bangladesh. Chanting slogans and displaying banners, the demonstrators demanded international attention on the situation back home.
Speaking over the phone, Hasina expressed solidarity with the Awami League members and urged them to continue raising their voices at international forums. “The world must know the reality of what is happening in Bangladesh,” she said, according to participants at the gathering.
