Authorities in Nepal on Saturday lifted the curfew and restrictive measures imposed in Kathmandu Valley and several other regions, signaling the gradual return of normalcy after weeks of political turmoil and public unrest.

The decision came a day after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s first woman prime minister to lead an interim government. Her appointment followed the resignation of the K. P. Sharma Oli-led dispensation, which was forced to step down amid nationwide protests sparked by the government’s controversial social media ban.

Officials confirmed that with the easing of restrictions, businesses, transportation, and public services were beginning to resume, though security forces remained on alert in sensitive areas. The curfew, initially imposed to curb violence and mass demonstrations, had severely disrupted daily life in the capital and surrounding districts.

Karki’s elevation to the premiership has been described as a landmark moment in Nepal’s political history, marking the first time a woman has assumed the top executive role. Her interim government is tasked with restoring stability, overseeing the rollback of restrictive measures, and preparing the ground for fresh political processes.
