BY A STAFF REPORTER: More than 100 people have been killed in an earthquake in China's northwestern Gansu province. The provincial earthquake relief headquarters said many more people were injured in the province after a strong, shallow quake.
Eleven people were killed and more than 100 injured in the town of Haidong in neighbouring Qinghai province. The quake caused significant damage, including collapsed homes, and people ran to the streets for safety.
Rescue efforts were underway early Tuesday, with Chinese President Xi Jinping calling for "all-out efforts" in search and relief efforts.
