Italy views India as a “long-trusted friend” and a top priority in its foreign and economic policy matrix, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday, underscoring Rome’s ambition to play a meaningful role in India’s economic rise. Tajani is on a three-day visit to New Delhi aimed at revitalising bilateral engagement at a time when global trade relationships are being reshaped by shifting geopolitical dynamics, particularly in the wake of Washington’s expansive tariff policies.

Tajani emphasised that Italy is prepared to contribute substantially to the India growth story. He highlighted plans for strengthened industrial collaborations, joint ventures and co-development projects across key sectors, including manufacturing, defence, clean energy, advanced machinery and high-technology areas.

To bolster these efforts, Tajani revealed that the Italian foreign ministry has set up a dedicated financing line of €500 million for India. The fund is designed to support Italian companies entering the Indian market and to facilitate the creation of joint ventures with Indian partners. According to him, this financial backing reflects Italy’s confidence in India’s expanding economy and its strategic importance in global value chains.
