Indian Diaspora Sees G7 Invite as Chance to Mend India-Canada Ties

New Jersey, US | The Indian diaspora is closely watching Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the June 2025 G7 Summit, viewing it as a strategic opportunity to improve strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada. HS Paneser, President of the Global Indian Diaspora Alliance (GIDA), remarked that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to Modi is being interpreted by many as a diplomatic olive branch.

“This is a crucial opportunity to react constructively and reset the course of India-Canada relations,” Paneser said. “The invitation itself signals a soft restart in what have been tense bilateral ties over the past year.”

India’s presence at the summit, despite not being a formal G7 member, is seen as a testament to its growing global influence. With over 1.4 billion people and its recent rise to the world’s fourth-largest economy, India’s strategic role in global affairs is increasingly being recognized, particularly in forums such as the G7.

The summit, hosted this year by Canada, is expected to feature discussions on global security, trade, and climate change. Modi’s presence may also open the door to renewed backchannel diplomacy between New Delhi and Ottawa following months of diplomatic frost triggered by sensitive geopolitical and domestic issues.
