London: Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram K. Doraiswami, announced that negotiations for the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are expected to restart soon, following an internal review by the UK government.
“The FTA is an ongoing process,” Doraiswami said while addressing the media. “The government that came to power here in the UK in July completed their internal review and is now ready to restart negotiations. We welcome that.”
He cautioned against making assumptions about the outcomes of the discussions. “Let’s not prejudice what happens in the negotiations because the negotiations have to restart. Let’s see what happens beyond that,” he added.
Highlighting the existing economic ties between the two nations, Doraiswami pointed out that the movement of goods and services continues to grow significantly. “Our investments in each other’s economies remain substantial, reflecting the robust economic relationship between India and the UK,” he noted.
The FTA, which has been under negotiation for some time, aims to deepen economic ties and enhance trade flows between the two nations. Both sides are expected to address key issues such as tariff reductions, market access, and investment protections during the upcoming talks.
The revival of negotiations marks a renewed commitment to fostering stronger economic partnerships and promoting bilateral growth.
