New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday issued an official statement reacting to the verdict delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh concerning former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The development has stirred political debate in Dhaka, prompting India to formally clarify its position as a neighbouring country with longstanding ties to Bangladesh.
“India has noted the verdict announced by the ‘International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh’ concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” the MEA said. The statement avoided any direct commentary on the judicial process but underscored New Delhi’s broader approach to developments within Bangladesh.
Reiterating India’s regional priorities, the MEA emphasised that New Delhi remains committed to the welfare of the Bangladeshi people. “As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country,” the statement read.
The government further signalled its intention to maintain open channels of communication across political and institutional spheres in Bangladesh. “We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end,” the MEA added, signalling a balanced diplomatic stance amid ongoing political tensions.
