New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed a clear and emphatic message to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their bilateral meeting, stating that India is “not neutral” in the Russia–Ukraine conflict but firmly “on the side of peace.” The remarks, made during the annual India–Russia summit, mark one of Modi’s strongest articulations of India’s position since the war began.
Modi said that since the onset of the Ukraine crisis, he and President Putin have maintained regular dialogue. He described the Russian leader as a “true friend” who has consistently kept India informed about developments. “Since the Ukraine crisis began, we have been in constant discussion. From time to time, you too, as a true friend, have kept us informed about everything. I believe that trust is a great strength,” he said.
The Prime Minister reiterated that India has long championed dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable way forward. “The welfare of nations lies in the path of peace. Together, we will lead the world towards that path,” he remarked, expressing confidence that recent global efforts would help restore stability.
In his most pointed comment, Modi clarified India’s stance to the global community. “Whenever I have spoken with leaders of the global community and discussed this issue in detail, I have always said that India is not neutral. India has a clear position, and that position is for peace. We support every effort toward peace,” he said.
