External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday expressed deep concern over the devastating earthquake that struck Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 600 people and injuring over 1,300. In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Jaishankar conveyed India’s solidarity with the Afghan people and announced New Delhi’s readiness to provide assistance in relief efforts.

“The devastating earthquake in Kunar Province of Afghanistan is a matter of deep concern. Express our support and solidarity to the Afghan people as they respond to it. India will extend assistance in this hour of need. Our condolences to the families of the victims. And our prayers for the early recovery of the injured,” Jaishankar wrote.

The 6.0-magnitude quake struck late Sunday night near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, with tremors causing widespread destruction across villages in Kunar and neighbouring areas. Officials in Afghanistan have warned that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

India has historically provided humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, including medical supplies, food grains, and disaster relief. Officials said modalities for extending immediate support are being worked out in coordination with agencies on the ground.
