BY A STAFF REPORTER: Two people were killed and another injured when gunmen opened fire in western Burundi near the Democratic Republic of Congo border. The attack took place on the way from Bubanza province to Bujumbura, Burundi's commercial capital.
"A vehicle going from Gihanga to Bujumbura was set on fire, killing two persons, including a woman and a man, who were in the car. One person was shot and wounded. "
Local residents said the attack, located about 5 kilometers from the border, was carried out by a rebel group called Red-Tabara, which has been fighting the Burundian government for years from its base in the eastern Republic of Congo.
