BY A STAFF REPORTER: Gunmen from two communities in nigeria's northwestern state of Zamfara have killed eight people and abducted at least 60 people, residents and a local traditional leader have said.

Suspected Islamist rebels attacked a military-guarded convoy in the country's northeast, killing two soldiers and four civilians, a police source and a motorist who witnessed the attack said.

Witnesses said the attackers set fire to five vehicles and fled with a truck.

President Bola Tinubu has yet to clarify how he will deal with widespread insecurity. His economic reforms, including the removal of expensive fuel subsidies and the release of naira currency, have increased the cost of leaving, angering citizens.
