German Ambassador to India Dr. Philipp Ackermann has called for accelerated progress on the proposed European Union–India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), describing it as a potential “game changer” for several key industries. His remarks come amid growing concerns over global trade instability, including the recent announcement by former U.S. President Donald Trump of a 25% tariff on Indian imports.
Speaking in Delhi, Dr. Ackermann highlighted the strong alignment of Indian and German economic interests, particularly in the fields of technology and semiconductors. “Indian and German interests are very congruent. We want to have more share in the semiconductor production and this is a great subject to discuss and compare notes,” he said. He added that German firms are keenly observing India, which he described as a “world leader in technology” and “a fabulous partner.”
On global trade disruptions, the ambassador remarked, “The German government's stance is clear — we need stability in the market, not erratic behavior.” He underscored the need for a stable and predictable trading environment, adding, “It is high time the European Union and India sit together and agree on the Free Trade Agreement.”
Responding to Trump’s tariff announcement, Dr. Ackermann noted that Germany and the broader EU have also been affected by similar American trade measures and said both Europe and India must now strategize to manage these shifts.
He further mentioned that the EU-India Summit, expected early next year, would be a platform to formalize a draft FTA agreement and advance the strategic partnership.
